From the output, we can see that ports 80,443 and 22 are open. I browsed both port 80 and 443 and identified that they were both sharing the same content. The following image is displayed:

Considering the image contains a bleeding heart, I decided to test the machine against the heatbleed vulnerability using Nmap.

| VULNERABLE:
| The Heartbleed Bug is a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library. It allows for stealing information intended to be protected by SSL/TLS encryption.
| State: VULNERABLE
| Risk factor: High
| OpenSSL versions 1.0.1 and 1.0.2-beta releases (including 1.0.1f and 1.0.2-beta1) of OpenSSL are affected by the Heartbleed bug. The bug allows for reading memory of systems protected by the vulnerable OpenSSL versions and could allow for disclosure of otherwise encrypted confidential information as well as the encryption keys themselves.

You can see from the output that the machine is vulnerable to it. I went on to download THIS python script and ran it against the machine to gather leaked data from the valentine machine:

It decoded to the phrase heartbleedbelievethehype which will be used later on.

I then went on to try and find hidden files hosted on the machine.

To do:

1) Coffee.
2) Research.
3) Fix decoder/encoder before going live.
4) Make sure encoding/decoding is only done client-side.
5) Don't use the decoder/encoder until any of this is done.
6) Find a better way to take notes.

Looking at this output it’s clear it’s a hexadecimal value. I copied it to the decoder tab in burp suite and ran it against the ASCI Hex decoder. The following output was provided:

We can see from the 2nd line that this RSA key is encrypted, so isn’t much use unless we can decrypt it. I attempted to decrypt it using the phrase gathered previously in the heartbleed exploit output.

-----END RSA PRIVATE KEY-----

From the output, you can see that the encrypted RSA key which I saved in the file key.ppk. Had successfully been decrypted using the password.

I then tried logging into the Valentine machine using the private key to authenticate. I attempted multiple logins including root and valentine but none would accept the key. I then tried with the username “hype” as provided in the password. This was successful and I was able to log in via SSH and capture the user flag:

hype@Valentine:~$ cd Desktop/
hype@Valentine:~/Desktop$ ls

hype@Valentine:~/Desktop$ cat user.txt
[REDACTED]

I then went on to perform privilege escalation. I ran linPEAS on the valentine machine and the following section of the output caught my eye:

It shows that there is a background Tmux session running on the machine as the root user. I attempted to connect to this session.

As evident by the output, connecting to the session was successful and I was able to capture the root flag.
